Discomfort breeds small business success, growth

For those of us who don't run or don't run often, the thought of a marathon makes us cringe. Try thinking about running 50 marathons, all back-to-back. In his Monday blog, Michael Hyatt highlights the amazing feats of runner Dean Karnazes, who's not only run the Badwater Ultramarathon five times, but who has also won it. His seemingly superhuman achievements may make us all feel like bums; however, Karnazes' dedication to his sport inspires more than just a zeal for physical fitness. Karnazes embraces discomfort. Running a small business presupposes many moments of discomfort. Tight budgets, uncertain forecasts and sometimes little growth spawn pain for owners and employees alike. Yet while it's natural to push harder and settle at a certain level of comfort, Hyatt says that it's far better to endure it for the sake of far better rewards. "You may think that comfort leads to happiness," he writes. "It doesn’t. Happiness comes from growth and feeling like you are making progress."
